The better-known Phantom of the Opera was written as a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles
Hart, and Richard Stilgoe. The first production was staged on October 9, 1986. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman played
the lead roles. Sarah Brightman was Lloyd Webber's wife at the time, and so he wrote many of the songs to fit her vocal range.
They originally wanted Colm Wilkinson to play the Phantom, but he was currently working on Les Miserables at the
time. (Another great musical! See the show website: http://www.lesmis.com). The show was a hit! Worldwide, the show has made over ₤1.6 million!!
The show continues to this day, starring Hugh Panaro and Sandra Joseph on Broadway,
Earl Carpenter and Rachel Barrell in London, and Gary Mauer and Marie Danvers in the Us Tour cast.

"The Phantom of the Opera" was written by Gaston Leroux in 1911. It was titled, in French, "Le Fantome De L'Opera". It
was the most popular of his novels, which included such mysteries as "The Mystery King" and "The Mystery of the
Yellow Room".
The book tells us of a young soprano named Christine Daae who's father dies when she is young. She lives in the
Opera Populaire after that, taking voice lessons from a mysterious voice. When she meets her childhood sweetheart, she is
afraid of this Opera Ghost that "smells like death." To protect themselves, they simply "play at" being engaged. Then there
is the mysterious Persian with the astrakhan cap, who knows more than anyone else of this Erik. In a deathly finale, the Phantom
routing for suicide or marriage, Christine makes the final decision to marry. But, the Phantom lets her go, then sickly and
heart-broken, dies peacefully. Years later, Christine returns to his grave with her engagment ring to keep a promise...
